Potterdown Farm, TA24

Potterdown Farm is a working farm set deep within a steep-sided valley in the heart of Exmoor National Park. Wild, secluded and incredibly atmospheric, the landscape feels like a ready-made film set. The approach itself is stunning, crossing a small bridge and descending into the combe where the 16th-century Somerset longhouse sits nestled at the valley floor, with the River Exe running through the bottom of the farm.

The Grade II listed longhouse features flagstone floors, large fireplaces, exposed oak beams, latch doors and low ceilings, retaining its historic character throughout. The old stone farmyard sits beside the house, while a more modern working yard and barns lie approximately 100 yards beyond, offering additional practical space.

The land is a mosaic of scrub, grazing pasture, ancient woodland and temperate rainforest, rising steeply to far-reaching hilltop views. Narrow footpaths and tracks weave through woodland down to the river, while traditional earth and stone banks lined with beech, willow and hazel frame the fields. Wildlife is abundant, from red deer and otters to birdsong and spring bluebells. At the top of the farm sits an Iron Age fort, adding historical gravitasse to this already dramatic setting.
