Sustainability Update: Project Green and Brown

At Farm Locations, sustainability is not just a responsibility, it’s at the heart of everything we do. Specialising in sourcing and managing farm locations for film, television, and photography productions, we operate at a unique intersection between the creative industries and the natural environment. This position gives us both the opportunity and the obligation to protect the landscapes that make our work possible while supporting the future of sustainable production.

Our approach is guided by a simple philosophy of balance: Project Green and Brown.

What is Project ‘Green and Brown’?

‘Green and Brown’ is our holistic approach to sustainability. It reflects our ethos that environmental responsibility is not only about cutting emissions and new green technologies, but also about stewardship; caring for the land, soil, heritage, and ecosystems that have existed for generations.

We believe sustainability should celebrate and protect:

  • The natural beauty and biodiversity of rural landscapes
  • The heritage buildings and traditions found on British farms
  • The vital role of agriculture in food production and rural economies
  • Promoting environmentally conscious practices to embed in creative production spaces.

By balancing environmental progress with respect for the land, and connection with it, we aim to create a more thoughtful and responsible production industry.

Be sure to take a look at the Farm Locations Sustainability Statement which sets out our commitment for the future here.

The Next Step in Our Sustainability Journey

We are evolving our services to embed more sustainable thinking and practices into the way we work. We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of productions across rural locations and supporting the industry’s transition towards more sustainable practices through meaningful, measurable action. Working alongside landowners and clients, we aim to make sustainability transitions feel more achievable and practical, helping to integrate sustainable practices into everyday production environments.

In embedding sustainability in our day-to-day work, we will be:

  • Encouraging sustainable decision-making throughout the production process
  • Reducing the environmental footprint of shoots on farm locations
  • Promoting responsible land use and protecting biodiversity
  • Supporting the preservation of rural heritage
  • Helping secure the future of family farms
  • Making countryside locations a more desirable and sustainable choice for productions

Practical Action and Innovation

Sustainability at Farm Locations goes beyond theory, we are proactively implementing and supporting real-world solutions.

We are currently developing a sustainability toolkit to help the farms we represent identify, improve, and promote their sustainable attributes. This ensures they can meet the evolving environmental requirements of modern productions in an accessible way.

Internally, we are also improving our own operations by:

  • Working remotely to reduce travel and office-related emissions
  • Expanding our network of locations with a sustainable strategy and infrastructure
  • Promoting a location’s sustainable features better to productions

Through these initiatives, we aim to grow a nationwide network of environmentally conscious locations while reducing our overall footprint.

The Sustainability Film Showcase & New Sustainability Recruit

On 9 July, we attended the 2026 Sustainability Film Showcase at Pinewood Studios, hosted by Sustainable Film, where film and TV crews connected with suppliers offering practical, innovative solutions for greener production. With increasing pressure on crews to reduce fuel use, manage waste, and adopt cleaner alternatives, often within tight time and budget constraints, the event focused on what matters most right now: cleaner power, smarter equipment, better waste solutions, and ways to meet BAFTA albert requirements without slowing production.

The showcase provided a valuable opportunity to engage with industry professionals committed to reducing the environmental impact of future productions and making sustainable choices more accessible on set. We attended as an official supplier, and many connections were made. We’re delighted to have since welcomed Claire Henry as a Sustainability Consultant to the Farm Locations team. With hands-on experience with sustainability on the upcoming feature film Highlander and a Master of Arts (Hon) in Sustainable Development and Film Studies from the University of St Andrews, Claire will support our mission to embed sustainable practices across the stages of location scouting and managing, by helping clients and farm owners navigate the shift towards more responsible filmmaking.

Looking Ahead

We believe Farm Locations can help lead the way in demonstrating how creative production and environmental stewardship can coexist. By embedding sustainability into our everyday thinking and doing, we aim to contribute to a more resilient, responsible, and forward-thinking screen and advertising industry.

One of our first steps is to showcase the sustainability efforts, facilities, and practices of the farms and rural locations we work with. We are currently updating our website’s location search tools to make it easier for clients to discover and filter farms based on their facilities and sustainability-related features. These enhancements are being tested with a pilot group of farms, with plans to expand the platform as we continue to develop and roll them out. We’ll share further updates as these changes progress.

We see sustainability as a continuous journey and a long-term commitment that we are excited to continue working alongside farmers, landowners, clients, and suppliers to develop practical and responsibly made decisions/solutions that support more sustainable production. We will be sure to share regular updates as we learn, evolve, and introduce new initiatives.

At Farm Locations, sustainability is about protecting the land, supporting farms and creatives, to ensure that today’s industry’s work doesn’t come at the expense of the environment and resources that future generations will depend on. We look forward to inspiring, learning from, and collaborating with the farming and production community as we take these steps together.
